Newcomers to America or people who have just left a shelter generally don't have a place to sit. The Northbrook congregation tries to demonstrate God's love by providing a variety of services and activities that fulfill the "Great Commandments" and "Great Commission". Photographer: Dick Lafavor

Is it too Good to be Free?

Hundreds of recent immigrants and others who have special needs come to a community Giveaway that happens every 4 to 6 weeks. According to Bertie Williams, director of Northbrook's Community Services, free furniture and clothing is given to many of the people who come to the Giveaways. To date, over 1,000 people have been helped.

Bertie and the friends and members of Life's Answer have extensive experience in ministering to the special needs of people who are recent immigrants or who are just leaving the security of a shelter. "Giving them a free chair or a bed is our way of showing God's love to them,"Bertie said. "We tell 'em God's gift of eternal life is free too, if they'll just accept it."
